Away From the Brink

On climate futures and Gaza horrors.

Yes, this is a newsletter primarily about climate solutions. But right now the genocide in Gaza is fully consuming my mind and heart. It’s horrifying that my government, my tax dollars, are enabling these atrocities.

When it comes to climate change, I feel somewhat clear on how I can be of use, but on this I’m at a tearful loss. All I can say is that if you are nauseous and full of rage and your heart is breaking, I am with you.

There are many worthy organizations working on relief efforts. I’ve been donating to the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund, World Central Kitchen, and Anera. Join me if you can.

I’m trying to pace myself with the news. (You too?) I’m mostly failing. (Relatable?) One thing is certain: We must be in this for the long haul. And by “this” I mean being good humans on our magnificent planet.

In August, I’ll be trying to replenish my spirit — living a more analog life and rebuilding my energy so I can continue showing up and being helpful. For me, that simply means: spending more time outside, reading some books, maybe writing some bad poems, and falling in love with nature all over again.

Then, I’ll be back in September with fresh episodes of What If We Get It Right? plus a tour of colleges across the US. (More on that soon.)

In the meantime, I’ll leave you with some summer listening: This episode is an excerpt from my audiobook, the chapter titled “Away From the Brink.” To remind you, the book (which inspired this newsletter and podcast) is What If We Get It Right?: Visions of Climate Futures. (Actually, I considered “Away From the Brink” for the book’s title — but a little less catchy, so it got repurposed.)

This chapter is essentially my answer to the BIG question: What if we get it right? What would that look like and feel like? I hope it’s appealing to you — and perhaps even sparks something in you.

Alright Earthlings 🌎, it’s a hard time to be a human with a soft heart. For now, all I have to offer is: It’s story time. Get cozy, and I’ll read to you.

If you dig it, you can listen to the whole audiobook wherever you listen to those. Or, if you prefer to consume books the old fashioned way, head over to the library or your local bookstore. Maybe you’ll find a kindred spirit in the nature aisle.
