Dear Ayana, before you (and others reading this) digitally turn off, I hope you join us to fight the betrayal by Governor Hochul in transitioning our home state from the ravages of fossil fuel. As you probably already know NYS has a law to transition to renewables call the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act passed in 2019. Yesterday a court found that the Department of Environmental Conservation had willfully neglected to uphold the law (https://nysfocus.com/2025/07/29/new-york-climate-law-delay-court). Last week the NYS Public Service Commission cancelled plans to build offshore electric transmission lines (https://www.nrdc.org/press-releases/public-service-commission-abandons-nyc-transmission-line-essential-offshore-wind) and we’re deep in a fight against Trump’s plan to resurrect 3! already cancelled fracked gas pipelines that were found to be unnecessary and hazardous to the environment (the Constitution Pipeline, the Algonquin extension—part of Project Maple and the Williams NESE pipeline).
The Williams NESE pipeline is being fast tracked and we only have until August 16 to comment against it. Denied with prejudice by the Department of Environmental Conservation in 2020 for damages it would do to marine life in NY Bight, construction would wreck havoc dredging up 150 years of industrial toxins off the sea floor, threatening wildlife, beaches (Coney Island, Jacob Riis/the Rockaways and the Jamaica Bay National Wildlife Refuge). Our utility bill costs are skyrocketing due to all this new fossil fuel infrastructure (the PSC last year approved a $5B pass along to raise utility rates to rebuild fracked gas infrastructure throughout Brooklyn, Queens and parts of Long Island), and these unnecessary and harmful projects will balloon utility prices higher.
Thank you for this Ayana. I’ve already read your book and was incredibly moved by this chapter, but hearing it in your voice was something else. My heart is full at the thought of this future.
Wishing you a restful August. Thank you for all you do 😊

Good for you for scheduling a month to recharge.
Thank you from a grateful Minnesotan.
